How are the mind and body interlinked? Originally published in Holland by traditional publishers, Aliefka Bijlsma has commissioned an English language edition and published it independently.
She was the first Dutch author to Crowd-fund the translation of a book. The translation is expertly done. The book is a slow burn - but it repays close attention. I went back to the beginning to read the first chapters again. I was reminded of Borgen in places because of the look inside the home lives of political individuals, but most of all of Thomas Kennedy's Falling Sideways which I read earlier in the year. This is a story about life in the Dutch embassy in Brazil. Five people sharing the same space. The main character in the novel is Melchior Steenbergen, ambassador of the Netherlands in Rio. His wife Leandra suffers from myalgic encephalomyelitis. There is their black maid Mercy, young Nikki and Tygo, both working at the embassy.
Melchior everyday life is little bit boring. He is going to work, coming home, visiting the sick wife. Leandra was once active woman and a professional photographer, but This is a story about life in the Dutch embassy in Brazil.

Mercy, their servant, is the right hand of Melchior and Leandra, and all she knows is being a servant. She brings some good spirit to the dreary family atmosphere, with her youthful clothes, nail manicure, optimism and naivety that she brings. Why is he placed there and with what purpose?
The author describes human psychology in depth and the goes deep into the source of the character's actions. Turning to their past, explains their presence. And there is Rio, the city full of colors and scents, gulping all those who will find themselves in it.
Honestly the book is not really my cup of tea. I expected a little more action and drama. I expected a different culmination, different outcome. The whole action was little bit monotonous. Although every character is quite complex, their stories for me were monotonous and depressing. Her husband has the main role.
The way of writing is solid, the characters are well psychologically processed. There were parts of the book that I really liked and there were moments when I thought that the story would get a brand new twist. There was a turn-over, but the one that could not imagine.

Als ambassademedewerker herkende ik af en toe wel iets in dit boek, maar gelukkig liggen de oude tijden achter ons. This was a novel unlike anything I've read before. I found out that this was actually transcribed from Dutch which surprised me! I think the best way to describe this book would be : elegant.
It had a certain air of prestige surrounding it. Aliefka is talented with the development of characters. Melchior, Leandra who tugs at my heartstrings!!

Nog maar koud enkele dagen geleden — om precies te zijn: drie dagen geleden — maakte Aliefka Bijlsma en haar uitgeverij Augustus bekend dat haar roman Mede Namens Mijn Vrouw gratis gedownload kon worden voor ebooks zie het bericht hier.
Wat blijkt: in drie dagen tijd is de roman Het zal duidelijk zijn dat dit gegeven veel discussies over de toekomst van het ebook beslecht. Wat de gevolgen ervan zullen zijn voor het papieren boek is nog niet helemaal te overzien.
Uitgeverij Augustus stelt het boek Namens mijn vrouw [sic] van Aliefka Bijlsma gratis beschikbaar als e-boek. De uitgever hoopt zo dat het boek, dat sinds juni in de winkels ligt, meer aandacht krijgt.
Ook is het een experiment om te kijken of het gratis digitaal verstrekken van boeken de verkoop in boekhandels doet toenemen. Rianne Blaakmeer, woordvoerder van Augustus, zegt vooral het boek nog eens onder de aandacht te willen brengen. Maar daarnaast is het ook een goede manier om eens te kijken hoe e-boeken leven onder de lezers. Hoeveel mensen downloaden het boek?

En dat is heel moeilijk als je nog geen naam hebt in de literaire wereld. Nu verdien ik er misschien niets aan, maar het is een investering.
Wie weet verkoopt een volgend boek straks beter. In de Verenigde Staten zagen wij dat het gratis verstrekken van e-boeken de papieren verkoop bij sommige boeken stimuleerde. Het geeft aan dat er vraag is naar e-boeken. Nu afwachten of de verkoop van de papieren versie toeneemt. Een primeur in Nederland! Iedereen die een ereader heeft iPad, Kindle etc. Zonder gedoe met registraties of beveiligde bestanden. En net als met een fysiek boek, kan je het vrijelijk doorgeven.
Doe dat dus vooral! Waarom geven we mijn boek als eBook gratis weg? Ten eerste omdat het kan en omdat uitgever en auteur dat bijzonder vinden. Aliefka Bijlsma vindt het belangrijk dat zoveel mogelijk mensen mijn boek kunnen lezen. Stuur dus dit mailtje door aan iedereen waarvan je weet of vermoedt dat ze een ereader hebben.
