Some of the latest, as well as this issue by the sounds of it, are far too heavily themed. It is nicer when there's room for something else than the theme. On another note, I hope that the drow equipment is not of the silly self-destructing kind.
I can't help but feel that that is too ridiculuous and metagamey. Mean, silly and unfair. To be fair, the Ashen Compact can be repurposed, the items don't really need to be drow, some of the monsters could be tweaked to be non-drow related and you might be able to use the maps. But overall, this might be the hardest theme to mine bits out of. She is worshipped alongside Loviatar. The Church of Loviatar is the state religion. The name of this country is Dambrath. East of Halruaa.
West of Luiren. South of the Shaar. And a serious threat to the entire continent. Combine Lolth and Loviatar, half-elves with half-drow, and a militant and highly organized society, and then you have pain I don't see any reference to the drow equipment being destroyed by sunlight. Still, the last thing the magazine needed was to have yet more domineering themes than the last two issues. I'm a fan of themes, but when the theme is almost all they do, that's a bit much. I liked some of the other themed issues they've done that have been more moderate.
Half a dozen theme articles tops, and then some other really neat articles about other stuff is the way to go. And taking out classic magazine components like Up on a Soapbox not that I really miss this one and Class Acts seems like kinda a shame as well.
For one thing, at least the regular columns are rarely press-ganged into the theme, so you at least get some non-theme content there Dragon magazine for a long time They dont bother me as long as they add new ones once in a while. Like the historical fantasy issue with did with cyber punk greyhawk and steampunk stuff.
Otherwise it gets boring. ColonelHardisson What? Me Worry? I guess I'll be getting this in the next day or two subscription. I have to say that this is the first issue I'm not really looking forward to.
Drow are interesting monsters to use, but I've had more than my fill of them after all these years. The big news for me is that Paizo has already taken over publication of The Dragon. This must have been in the works for a while, since this issue had to have gone to the printer a good month ago or so. And I haven't paid much attention to drow since we finished the GDQ series, lo those many years ago.
