I don't recall seeing it, logged into the mso account on the box. Username: rogcesadmin Password: wra8uje If you did, there's supposed to be a checkbox to disable commercial gateway functions. Anyways, if the OP has problems, he could always phone tech support to push the button and turn the SMC into a dumb modem, which is actually a brilliant move. Oh snap Rogers is using these crap combos for everything Appropriate to resurrect this zombie thread for Halloween! I'm putting in a wrt54gl this time.
I agree, the Belkin was crap. It happened to be the only thing I could find on my last visit. Any ideas what else may be responsible for their very shoddy internet service, if this doesn't help?
Primarily, the internet gets horribly slow or frequently disconnects. Pauly join canada. Rogers seems to be not distributing plain modems except to people who already are using plain modems. I'm happy to consider any and all alternatives. It's slow at times, frequently disconnects users at others. I was told this is because that device is crap.
Hopefully we will see a manual soon. Thanks RogersMoin. I had looked at the manual you provided for the user's guide for the model CGNV4. It has no telephone ports, just like mine. Perhaps other Rogers customers have the telephone ports on theirs, but mine does not. I appreciate looking up for the manual and providing the link. Your observation regarding telephone ports is correct, none of the Rogers' Internet modems have embedded telephone ports.
I've noticed the CGN3 manual mentioned " The CGN3 must be placed vertically on its stand, should not be positioned in either wall-mount or horizontal. Which is correct? Mine did not come with a stand, nor did I know I had to let it stand vertically which it is now, not wanting to damage my rented modem!
Why aren't there any label stuck on the modem saying this? Just wondering! All the Hitron modems from CGN3 onwards must be placed vertically, however, not all the models will have a stand. I appreciate you taking care of your modem.
It would be certainly nice to have a label with modem's placement orientation, thank you for the feedback. I believe the only reason to stand upright is because of the internal wifi antennas. If you are just using it as a modem, there probably is no reason to stand it upright unless it has air venting from the top of the modem. Welcome to Rogers Community Forums! Thank you for joining this conversation; both of your beliefs are true. The modem has WiFi antennas and vents on both side, so placing the modem on its side can overheat the modem and also can degrade the WiFi performance.
I have just received this particular modem and I have put this in bridge mode. Upon inspection of the casing, it is perforated on all side. While the vents on the top are larger than the sides, it would not harm the modem if it was lying on its side bridge mode only in a well ventilated location. Ideal is still upright of course. In response to skinorth. I had no issues with the Webstar modem and Linksys router I was using. I have now also replaced the SMC router with another one, which means new router and new power brick and cable. Apparently, you don't need tech support to authorize a like for like swap. If I was the only one, i would think it might be my coax cable, but I'm far from being the only one. The logs themselves aren't very useful, but there's nothing there that shows a pattern consistent with the reboot times.
I think there is an update button on the web page, but I'm hesitant to use it because I'm not sure if that would render the device unacceptable to Rogers, as they have customized the interface somewhere by removing features.
In response to fyao. I hope this clarifies the rationale behind my original posting. I'll see if I can find a way to plug the modem directly into the wall.
I suspect I will need to find a longer coax cable.
