The woes of this office never end. I admit I'm not very familiar with things at this level, I've mostly been using simple routers with default settings and only a few port forwards, etc.
My location is the new second office of a company the other office is across the country. We also have a cage in a datacenter. The datacenter has a netscreen 25, the first office has a netscreen 5GT, and we have a netscreen 5GT. There is a site-to-site VPN between office 1 and the datacenter. We are hoping to set up the same thing. To do this we purchased 1. Outbound traffic works fine, everything is fine.
Except now I want to get the VPN going. With a simpler router I would try to set up a DMZ in the netopia for the netscreen, but that doesn't seem possible. Should I setup a static route? Disable NAT? Port forward? Do something else? I'd appreciate anyone who has any experience with these netopias and could point me in the right direction. The router won't matter.
If you didn't sign up for static IP addresses from Covad, go and do that. Once you have a static IP the Netscreen will do the NAT for you , you can either use the wizard on the Netscreen for the VPN, or follow one of the examples in the guides that came with it Well that particular Netopia can do site-to-site vpn, so why bother with the Netscreen unless you are mandated too? I don't have that particular modem, but I have a netopia doing a site to site vpn with a sonicwall pro no problems.
I'm assuming this is the router? We have 1 static IP address already. Sagan, are you saying that at that point we can remove the netopia entirely? Yea you can just get rid of it completely. Since you have a Netscreen at the host already, doing VPN between 2 Netscreen boxes is easier than trying to get it working between vendors Provided the Netscreens support NAT traversal, all he would really have to do is put the netcreen in between the netopia and his LAN and then create his tunnel.
No, the Netopia is the DSL modem, and it also has a router in one little ugly box. We purchased the netscreen for this location so we could use existing expertise, as well as make the VPN much, much easier.
